Working with Niasha Fray has been an enlightening learning experience that has changed the way I work for the better. I graduated from Georgetown University in 2021 with a psychology degree and brought skills in writing, graphic design, and content creation. However, coming into this apprenticeship, I had no knowledge of health equity and what it meant to truly advocate for it.
Despite that, I was ready and eager to learn. Throughout the apprenticeship, I assisted Niasha with her email newsletter, blog development, and website editing. In the three months I spent under Niasha’s generous mentorship, I have gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of health equity, particularly around accessibility, representation, and community empowerment by connecting with others. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the various topics she discusses in the podcast and with her guests, including maternal health, criminal justice, and the experiences of minorities in the health field. Learning about how cultural barriers can prevent people from receiving the care they need and how authentic representation is crucial for building trust has reshaped how I view healthcare, made me more aware of what needs are present in health equity, and strengthened my ability to speak up for myself and my needs in all areas of my life – because if I don’t speak up for myself, no one will.
One of the things I am most proud of is the newsletter. I created visual elements that not only looked appealing but also conveyed the key messages and specific role of Niasha’s business within the health equity space. Through this process, I learned the importance of making valuable content and growing my skills to be a thought leader rather than a passive follower – an important leadership quality as an entrepreneur. Niasha’s knowledge on current events and being a woman in the entrepreneurial space taught me how to be more confident using my voice in developing my own opinions and strategies, and for developing my leadership skills in my business. She also inspired me to vote for the very first time, simply by talking about it, showing her passion, and by providing the resources that easily give the necessary information for taking action.
In the future, I plan to continue applying the knowledge I’ve gained to create more accessible and meaningful content that I know will bring positive change to my communities. Whether through graphic design, writing articles, or sharing my message on the Internet, I will prioritize projects that allow me to collaborate with other leaders who value making a meaningful difference.
As a budding entrepreneur, I offer services related to graphic design, blogging, podcasting, and marketing virtual assistance.
